The Hyundai Kona took top honors at the first What Car? Real Range test that puts the stated range of the latest electric cars on the market to the test to see how they hold up in the real world.

In the test, the KONA electric achieved the longest real-world range of any of the cars tested with an impressive 259 miles of range on a single charge. Hyundai’s Ioniq also took high honors in the testing, boasting the highest electric vehicle efficiency, with a tested efficiency of 3.9 miles per kWh. These results echo what CleanTechnica experienced in our review of the Ioniq, which we found to have not only some of the best efficiency, but also packed a surprising amount of functionality into its compact form factor.

The testing put 13 zero-emissions head to head in a variety of tests and driving conditions at the test track at the Millbrook Proving Grounds in an attempt to compare the real world performance of the latest generation of electric vehicles.

“The results of the What Car? Real Range tests are a terrific endorsement of our zero-emissions models,” Tony Whitehorn, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor UK said. “Achieving not only the highest ‘real-world’ driving range, but also the best efficiency and lowest cost-per-mile figure of any brand is testament to our commitment to reducing the environmental impact of our vehicles. These cars are a compelling proposition for both fleet and retail customers, and we’re confident that KONA Electric and IONIQ Electric will continue to attract praise from media and motorists alike.”

With Hyundai having built some of the best performing electric vehicles on the road and customers have come out en masse to buy them, it’s time for the focus to shift to production. Building electric cars, or more specifically, securing sufficient battery capacity, has been the bottleneck in Hyundai’s ability to deliver cars to customers in volumes that will make an impact, with waits of 7 months or more being regular occurrences for those looking to get into a fully electric Hyundai outside of a few key markets.
