Sales numbers just came out from Ford, Honda, and Toyota. With those numbers and the Tesla sales numbers we received yesterday (along with a few simple estimates), we can see how the 5 top selling cars in the USA broke out in December 2018 and in the 4th quarter of 2018.

Overall, the Tesla Model 3 was the #4 top selling car in the USA in December and #5 in the 4th quarter.

The Tesla Model 3 was the only car from an American car company that was in the top 5 in both rankings, which also means it was the #1 top selling car in the US from an American car company.

Car December Q4 2018
Toyota Camry 29,093 80,552 343,439
Honda Accord 28,627 75,772 291,071
Honda Civic 26,384 70,724 325,760
Tesla Model 3 25,570 60,570 139,730
Toyota Corolla 25,439 68,564 303,732

You can also compare these 5 models for the full year, but note that the Tesla Model 3 is not in the top 5 in that timeframe since Tesla was not producing the Model 3 at a very large scale in early 2018.

We’re still waiting on sales figures from Hyundai, whose Elantra should be in the #6 spot in December and in Q4. There’s a super slim chance it could have enough of a blowout sales month to be #5 in the 4th quarter, but it would basically have to pull off a miracle. Hyundai’s figures are in, and, indeed, it produced no miracle.

Once sales from Hyundai and some others come in, I’ll be publishing many more auto sales reports for December, the 4th quarter, and 2018 in the US and globally.

Stay tuned!
